When was the last time you attended a good webinar? I’ve definitely joined a few.

I didn’t just learn but had a really good time, too! Even met some marketing buddies at a digital marketing webinar. That’s how you can tell if it was a success. Kind of like a party.

Especially during the pandemic. They were all the rage. It was the closest way to connect in person without actually meeting each other in person.

But now that life is returning to normal—or close to it—are webinars still a good way to meet with each other?

In the wake of 2-3 years of Zoom fatigue, and the craving for face-to-face human interaction filling people’s calendars pretty quickly, do people still want to attend webinars?

Is it a worthwhile strategy for your business?

In this article, I’m going to discuss:

  • A very quick recap of the history of webinars
  • The pros and cons of hosting one
  • When you should hold webinars and how to keep them interesting
  • Alternatives you should be looking into and how they’re better

The Evolution of Digital Marketing Webinars: A Brief History

Once upon a time, webinars were the cool kids on the block. They emerged in the late 1980s, but they didn’t take off until 1996, revolutionizing the way we shared information and connected with people all around the globe.

They were fantastic for businesses, educators, and just about anyone who wanted to share their knowledge without geographic limitations. Webinars allowed people to attend live presentations, workshops, and events from the comfort of their own homes. Pretty awesome, right?

But then, as with all things, the world changed. New technologies as well as digital marketing trends popped up, and suddenly, webinars started to feel a bit…outdated. As social media and other interactive platforms took off, webinars struggled to keep up with the demand for more engaging, dynamic content.

So webinars fell from grace, but they didn’t disappear altogether. They still have some niche uses, and with a bit of innovation, they might just make a comeback. In the meantime, there are alternatives that might be better for you.

Pros: The Bright Side of Webinars

Let’s give webinars some well-deserved credit. There’s a reason why they were the thing to do at one point. Webinars have definitely had their moments in the spotlight of digital marketing trends, and it was all because of these:

1. Cozying Up With Warmer Leads: Webinars are like a big ol’ bear hug for potential clients. They help you create warmer leads by giving your audience a chance to know you, your product, or your service a little better.

A whopping 73% of B2B marketers and sales gurus agree that webinars take the cake when it comes to generating top-notch leads.

2. Building Direct Engagement/Relationships: Webinars let you and your audience interact in real time. You get to interact and build a genuine connection.

Attendees are also eager to learn. The average time an attendee will stay and pay attention is 61 minutes. Ah, the magic of engagement!

3. Clearing Up Common Questions: Webinars can be a fantastic Q&A session. You know those frequently asked questions that pop up all the time? Webinars are your chance to tackle them head-on and provide clear, concise answers to your audience, live and in person (well, virtually).

4. Converting B2B Clients With Thorough Information: For your B2B pals, webinars can be a game-changer. They give you the chance to dish out all the juicy details that B2B clients crave. It’s like giving them a VIP tour of your offerings! By providing in-depth information, you’re making it easier for them to say “yes” and convert.

Cons: The Not-So-Sunny Side of Webinars

Webinars have got their fair share of challenges, and it’s important to consider these drawbacks before jumping on the webinar bandwagon. While it’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment when webinars started to lose their mojo, we can definitely see some signs that they’re not quite as effective as they used to be.

From time-consuming preparations to potentially low attendance rates, webinars have their bumps in the road. Let’s take a look at some stats that suggest webinars might be a bit past their prime:

1. Time Crunch Conundrum: Webinars can be a scheduling nightmare. They require everyone to set aside a specific time to watch, and with busy lives and different time zones, that’s not always possible. It’s like planning a party and realizing half your guests can’t make it. Bummer!

In fact, at least 24% of registrants much prefer the on-demand replays. Your Time’s A-Tickin’: Hosting a webinar takes up a chunk of your precious time, too. There’s planning, promoting, and presenting, all of which can eat away at your already jam-packed schedule. And then there’s the fact that most register just days in advance—or even at the last minute!

  • 33% of attendees register on the day itself
  • 60% sign up a week before
  • But only 44% show up

That’s a lot of stress and anxiety on top of your preparation. You add more than just one thing to your never-ending to-do list. Yikes!

2. Low Attendance, Low ROI: If your webinar has low attendance, it might not give you the best return on investment (ROI). After all the effort you put into planning and promoting, a low turnout can be a major letdown.

Even when people do register for your awesome digital marketing webinar, there’s no guarantee they’ll show up. ON24 reports that the average webinar attendance rate is around 46%, which means more than half of your registrants are missing out. Not exactly the outcome you were hoping for!

3. Zoom Fatigue: The name of this phenomenon was coined at the height of the application’s popularity. It’s when you feel super drained after attending back-to-back webinars or video calls. The lack of in-person interaction, the occasional tech glitches, and those dreaded awkward silences…they all add up and can make webinars a bit of a bummer.

In 2020, the average webinar registration attendance was at 60%, while now, it’s barely 50%. This declining rate indicates that webinar participants are feeling fatigued or burned out due to these online events. So yeah, webinars are cool and all, but sometimes they can be downright exhausting!

Use Cases: When Webinars Still Make Sense

There are still some situations where webinars shine. Let’s take a look at those situations when webinars can make a big impact:

1. Specialized Training Sessions: A study by the Brandon Hall Group found that 70% of companies consider virtual instructor-led training to be as good as, if not better than, traditional classroom training.

When you’ve got some super specific training to share, webinars are your best buddy. They let you provide detailed instructions and demonstrations, and you can even answer questions as they arise. It’s basically a virtual classroom where everyone gets a front-row seat!

2. Expert Panel Discussions: Imagine gathering a bunch of industry gurus in one virtual space to share their wisdom—that’s where webinars can truly strut their stuff. Hosting expert panel discussions allows for a dynamic exchange of ideas and insights, giving your audience access to top-notch expertise.

3. Industry-Specific Events. Webinars are perfect for those niche industry events where a targeted audience wants to dive deep into a specific topic. They were rated to be the “video [format that] produced the best results,” as reported by the Content Marketing Institute, MarketingProfs, and ON24 in 2022.

Whether it’s a product launch, a regulatory update, or a specialized workshop, webinars provide an accessible platform to bring everyone together. Plus, you get to spend time with like-minded folks who share the same passion!

Innovative Features and Strategies To Enhance Webinar Experiences

It’s not the end of webinars. Far from it—thankfully, because I’m still looking forward to another digital marketing webinar or two. Let’s talk about giving webinars a fresh new look. Here are some fun features and strategies that can help modernize webinars and make them more engaging:

1. Interactive Tools: Bring on the polls, quizzes, live chats, and Q&A sessions! By integrating interactive tools, you can get your audience involved, keep them on their toes, and foster active participation. Instead of a monologue, turn it into a lively conversation!

2. Hybrid Events: Why not mix it up with live and prerecorded elements? This combo lets you create a more dynamic and flexible content delivery, giving your webinars a cool new twist.

3. Personalization: Tailoring your content to different audience segments can make your webinars feel extra special. By customizing your content, you’re creating a unique experience that speaks directly to your viewers. Who doesn’t love a personalized invitation?

By exploring these innovative features and strategies, you can give webinars a much-needed facelift and help them find their place again in the digital world. Happy webinar-ing!

Better Alternatives: The Cool Kids on the Block

Webinars aren’t the only way to engage with your audience. In fact, there are some pretty effective alternatives that can help you achieve similar goals without the hassle of scheduling live events. Let’s check out these cool kids on the block:

1. A Demo Video (Just Like AutoGrow’s!): Why not create a snazzy demo video that showcases your product or service in action? This way, your audience can watch it whenever they want, no need to block off time in their busy calendars.

As much as I love attending a good digital marketing webinar, if there’s no need to hold a live session, we at Autogrow don’t hold one. Less anxiety, less stress, and maybe even more efficient.

A study by Wyzowl showed a massive 84% of folks said they were swayed to buy a product or service by simply watching a video. That’s a pretty strong case for the power of demo videos! It has worked pretty well for us so I don’t see it changing anytime soon.

2. Lead Magnets or Guides: Who doesn’t love a good lead magnet or guide? These valuable resources can help you capture leads and offer your audience something useful in return.

HubSpot found that companies that create high-quality content can generate up to almost 70% more leads in a month than those that don’t. And lead magnets definitely qualify as high-quality content. That’s a lot of potential clients with just a well-crafted guide!

So while webinars have their place, there are plenty of other fun and just as effective—maybe even more—options to consider. Give these alternatives a spin, and you just might find a new favorite way to connect with your audience!
